SYMPTOMS
========

If you are using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to transfer files to or from a
Windows NT-based server that is running Microsoft Internet Information Server
4.0, file names may be changed, or you may not be able to locate files and
folders that are on the server. These files or folders contain extended ASCII
characters. Users may also have trouble logging on if a user's user name
contains extended ASCII characters.

CAUSE
=====

The FTP server functionality in Internet Information Server 4.0 does not support
extended characters. The FTP server removes characters that are above ASCII 240
(in decimal values).

RESOLUTION
==========

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to
correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems
that are experiencing this specific problem.

NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls
