SYMPTOMS
========

When you attempt to auto-upgrade to MSN 5.4, migration is stopped before
completion. The log in error is as follows:

"A MSN Software Update Was not required at this time. If needed you will receive
an update when you close MSN and start a new session."

CAUSE
=====

This is a known issue and the product team is working to resolve it.

RESOLUTION
==========

Removed your MSN connection file, create a manual connection, connect using the
manual connection, and then re-download the 5.4 software.

To remove your MSN connection file

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then click
  Add/Remove Programs.

2. Remove MSN Internet Access 5.4.

3. If prompted, restart your computer.

4. Follow the steps in KB article Q294853 to create a manual connection named
  "temp".

To connect with Windows 98 and 95

1. Right-click the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop, and then click
  Properties.

2. Click the Connection tab.

3. Under Dial-up Setting, click Add.

4. Name the connection "temp", and then click Next.

5. Type area code and number of MSN local access number, and then click Next.

6. Click Finish.

7. Click temp, and then click Set Default.

8. Select Always dial my default connection.

9. Click Settings.

10. In the User name box, type "MSN/username".

11. In the Password box, type your password.

12. Click Properties, and then click the Server types tab.

13. Under Accepted options, make sure that Enable software compression is
  selected.

14. Under Allowed Network Protocols, make sure that only TCP/IP is selected.

15. Click OK twice.

16. Double-click the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop to connect to MSN.

To connect with Windows Millenium Edition

1. Double-click My Computer.

2. Double-click Control Panel.

3. Double-click Dial-up Networking.

4. Double-click Make New Connection.

5. Name the connection "temp", and then click Next.

6. Type area code and the number of a local access number, and then click Next.

7. Click Finish.

8. Right click "temp", and then click Properties.

9. Click the Security tab.

10. Type "MSN/user name" in the User name box.

11. Type your password.

12. Click the Dialing tab.

13. Select This is my default Internet connection.

14. Select Always dial my default connection.

15. Click OK.

16. Close Dial-Up Networking.

17. Connect to MSN by double-clicking the Internet Explorer icon.

To complete the MSN 5.4 autoupgrade installation

1. Start Internet Explorer.

2. Go to: http://fdl.msn.com/public/msnqfe/components/us/msn54fu.exe.

3. Select Run this program from its current location, and then click the OK
  button at the File Download prompt.

4. If prompted with any security warnings, click Yes.
  This will self-extract the .exe file and launch a new browser window that
  points to https://migration.msn.com/upgrade53. You will be prompted with an
  Explorer User Prompt box.

5. Enter in your MSN Member ID without the domain name (don't include @msn.com,
  just include the first half of the address, for example, johndoe), and then
  click OK.

6. Proceed through the migration Web pages as usual.
  Note: Do not interrupt the migration. When the upgrade is complete, you will
  be disconnected, and Logon Manager will start.

7. Type your password.

8. Click Sign-in.

9. From Dial-Up Networking, remove the "temp" connection that you created in the
  steps above. Note: Do not remove the MSN Internet Access connection.
