SYMPTOMS
========

When you run Microsoft Train Simulator, and choose an activity that contains
snow or if you change the weather in your activity to snow then you may receive
one of the following error messages when starting the activity or when the
activity displays snow:

  Mod Ver: 4.8.1.881
  OffSet: 0008E2C6

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur if there are issues with your computer's video card.
This behavior has been known to occur with the following video chip sets:

- Intel i740

- Intel 810 (82810e)

- ATI Rage Fury Maxx

- Elsa Victory II

- SiS 530/630/730

This behavior can also occur if you are using one of the Marias Pass activities
that features snow -- for example, the "Grain Train Through the Night" scenario.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are
presented.

Method 1: Update Video Drivers
------------------------------

For information about how to contact your video card manufacturer, click the
appropriate article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge

To identify the manufacturer and model of your video adapter, follow these
steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click System.

3. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft
  Windows Millennium Edition (Me), click the Device Manager tab.

  -or-

  If you are using Microsoft Windows 2000, click Device Manager on the Hardware
  tab.

4. Click the plus sign (+) next to "Display adapters" to expand the branch.

5. Under the "Display adapters" branch, note the manufacturer and the model of
  your video adapter, and then click OK.

6. Close all of the open windows on the desktop.

After updating your video card drivers, follow these steps to refresh the video
settings in Train Simulator:

1. Quit Train Simulator.

2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Games, point to Train
  Simulator, and then click Train Simulator Troubleshooter.

3. Click Change Video Driver.

4. Quit Train Simulator Troubleshooter.

If this issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Method 2: Install Update
------------------------

An update has been created to resolve some compatibility problems with several
video cards. To download and install the update, browse to the following
Microsoft Web site:

  http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsim

If this issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.

Method 3 Disable Snow
---------------------

You may be able to work around this issue by using the disable-snow option in
Train Simulator Troubleshooter. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Quit Train Simulator.

2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Games, point to Train
  Simulator, and then click Train Simulator Troubleshooter.

3. Click Troubleshooting.

4. Click to select the "Snow causes game to crash or does not display" check
  box.

5. Quit Train Simulator Troubleshooter.
