SYMPTOMS
========

When you start any of the Microsoft Encarta programs listed at the beginning of
this article, the introductory multimedia movie may not play correctly.

When you start any of the Microsoft Encarta 2002 products listed above, you may
see this message:

  ShockWave Error:10
  One or more Shockwave files are missing. Would you like to go to the
  Macromedia website to repair your ShockWave player?

When you start any of the Microsoft Picture It! programs listed at the beginning
of this article, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

- The Welcome movie may not play.

- When you click Get Creative Ideas, the page may appear blank or have just
  have an 'X' on it.

- Helpful movies may not play.

- When you start Microsoft Encarta Africana 2001, you may see this error
  message:

  Unable to find file "@\..\shared\code\coreutil"

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur if Macromedia Shockwave is damaged.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are
presented.

NOTE: To follow these steps, you must have Macromedia Shockwave version 8.0 or
later installed on your computer.

Uninstall Shockwave
-------------------

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

3. Click Shockwave, and then click Add/Remove.

4. Follow the instructions on the screen to uninstall the Shockwave software.

NOTE: If the uninstallation process fails, continue with the next section.

Delete the Macromed Folder
--------------------------

1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.

2. In the left pane, double-click Windows.

3. Double-click System.

4. Right-click Macromed, and then click Delete.

5. Click Yes to accept the deletion.

6. Close the Exploring System window.

Run Shockwave Removal
---------------------

Download and run the Shkwvfix.exe file. The following file is available for
download from the Microsoft Download Center:

  ShkWvfix.exe

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current
virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was
posted. The file is stored on secure servers that prevent any unauthorized
changes to the file.

The Shkwvfix.exe file removes registry entries from Microsoft Windows 95,
Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), and Microsoft
Windows 2000. When you are prompted to restart your computer after you finish
running the program, restart your computer.

Follow these steps to run the Shockwave Removal program:

1. Double-click Shkwvfix.exe.

2. Click Yes.

3. Click OK when the program finishes running.

4. Click Yes to restart your system.

Install MacroMedia Shockwave Latest Release
-------------------------------------------

To download and install the latest version of Shockwave, browse to the following
Macromedia Web site:

  http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download
  (http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download)

1. Read steps 1, 2, and 3 on the Web site.

2. Under step 1, click Click Here To Install.

NOTE: The Click Here To Install button may alternate between that phrase and an
Autoinstall Now! phrase.

3. If you are prompted with a Security Warning dialog box, click Yes to install
  Shockwave Player 8.0.

4. Follow the instructions on the screen to install Shockwave Player.

5. When the Shockwave Player installation is complete, a new browser window is
  opened and a Shockwave movie begins to play.

6. When the movie begins to play, you know that the installation of Shockwave
  Player is successful.

7. Close your Internet connection.
