To access instant messaging in MSN Companion, click messenger in the toolbar. To
start an instant messaging conversation, click one of the names shown as
available to join in the address list.

To turn off all instant messaging so that you do not receive any incoming
messages click messenger in the toolbar, click privacy settings, and then click
turn off instant messaging.

To turn instant messaging back on, click messenger in the toolbar and then click
turn on instant messaging.

To block instant messaging from individuals in your contact list, click messenger
in the toolbar, click privacy settings, and then select blocked for those you
wish to block.

To add a new person in the address book for instant messaging for the MSN
Companion.

1. Click mail on the toolbar, click open address book, and then click add a new
  person.

2. Type the name and e-mail address in the corresponding input boxes, select set
  this person up for instant messaging, and then click add.

3. If the person you are adding does not have Messenger, click send invitation
  to invite them to join you.
