SYMPTOMS
========
The Dead Gateway Detection algorithm may not properly attempt to switch gateways
in the correct sequence when there are no entries in the ARP cache.
CAUSE
=====
This problem occurs because the Tcpip.sys driver that shipped with Windows NT
4.0 Service Pack 4 and Service Pack 5 does not properly attempt to arp for
gateways in the correct order if there are no entries in the ARP cache.
RESOLUTION
==========
Windows NT Server or Workstation 4.0

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or the

WORKAROUND
==========
To work around this problem, add a static entry to the arpcache using the ARP
command.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are
listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in
Windows NT Server version 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 6.
