SUMMARY

This article describes how to turn off the Office Assistant so you will not be
prompted with tips on how to more effectively use certain features in Word.

MORE INFORMATION
================

The Office Assistant in Word can show you tips for features you may not know
about and offer suggestions on how to better use the features you do know
about.

For example:

- When you start typing a letter, the Office Assistant may appear and ask if
  you need help in writing your letter. This prompt usually appears after you
  type a salutation and press Enter. For example, when you type

     Dear Mom,

the Office Assistant appears with the following prompt:

  It looks like you're writing a letter. Would you like help?

- When you number items in a list, the Office Assistant may appear with:

  Word can automatically convert your typing to a Numbered List item.

- When you create bullet items in a list, for example with a dash, the Office
  Assistant may appear with:

  Word can automatically convert your typing to a Bulleted List item.

- When you type +----+----+ to form the border of a table, the Office Assistant
  may appear with:

  Word can automatically convert your typing to a Table.

- When you type dashes under the text you want as a heading, for example

     Chapter One
     -----------

  the Office Assistant may appear with:

  Word can automatically convert your typing to a solid black border.


To Turn Off "Using features More Effectively" Tips
--------------------------------------------------

To turn this feature off, follow these steps:

1. Right-click the Office Assistant, and then on the shortcut menu, click
  Options.

  NOTE: If the Assistant is hidden, click the Office Assistant button on the
  Standard toolbar.

2. On the Options tab, click to clear the "Using features more effectively"
  check box, and then click OK.
