SUMMARY
=======

This article describes how to use the Windows 98 CD-ROM to install MSN, The
Microsoft Network.

The Windows 98 CD-ROM includes MSN version 2.52. You cannot install earlier
versions of MSN on a Windows 98-based computer. If you attempt to install an
earlier version of MSN, you receive the following error message:

  Setup has detected that you are running a version of Windows that already
  includes the updated files or enhancements you are attempting to install.

NOTE: Microsoft recommends that you close all running programs before you start
MSN Setup. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type "msconfig" (without quotation marks), and then click
  OK.

3. On the Startup tab, click to clear each check box, and then click OK.

4. Click Yes to restart the computer.

After you install MSN, repeat these steps, clicking to select each check box in
step 3.

To install MSN version 2.52 using the Windows 98 CD-ROM, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the
  SHIFT key to prevent the installation program from automatically starting.

2. On the desktop, double-click My Computer, and then double-click the CD-ROM
  drive that contains the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

3. Double-click the Win98 folder, and then double-click the Ols folder.

4. Double-click the MSN folder, and then double-click the Msnsetup folder.

5. Double-click the Msnstart.exe file.

6. Follow the instructions on the screen to install MSN.
