SYMPTOMS
========

When you send and receive e-mail messages using Microsoft Outlook Express on
MSN, The Microsoft Network, you may receive one of the following error
messages:

  The host 'pop3.email.msn.com' could not be found. Please verify that
  you have entered the server name correctly. Account 'MSN Mail', Server:
  'pop3.email.msn.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
  Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

  The host 'smtp.email.msn.com' could not be found. Please verify that
  you have entered the server name correctly. Account 'MSN Mail', Server:
  'pop3.email.msn.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
  Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur if MSN or Outlook Express is not configured to use the
correct connection.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, configure MSN and Outlook Express to use the correct
Connection To do this,follow these steps:

Make sure Outlook Express is properly configured to work with MSN. For
information about how to configure Outlook Express to work with MSN, see the
following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

1. Double-click the MSN icon on the desktop and click Settings.

2. On the Options tab, select the Use this service for all dial-up Internet
  access check box, and then click OK.

Test to see if the issue is resolved. If the issue continues to occur, proceed to
the next step.

1. Double-click the Outlook Express icon on the desktop and if the MSN Sign-In
  screen appears, click Cancel.

2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.

3. On the Mail tab, click MSN Mail, and then click Properties.

NOTE: The name of your MSN e-mail account may vary depending on how you configure
Outlook Express. MSN Setup creates a default MSN e-mail account named "MSN
Mail."

   - For Microsoft Outlook Express 4.x on the Connection tab, click Connect
     using Internet Explorer's or a 3rd party dialer.

   - For Microsoft Outlook Express version 5.0 on the Connections tab click
     Always connect to this account using MSN.

4. Click OK, and then click Close.

This issue can also occur if Microsoft Internet Explorer is not configured to use
MSN. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Right click the desktop icon Internet Explorer.

2. Click properties.

3. For Internet Explorer 4.x click the Connection tab, click Connect to the
  Internet using a modem, click Settings, and then in the "Use the following
  Dial-Up Networking connection" box select MSN.

-Or-

For Internet Explorer 5.0 click the Connections tab, click Always dial my default
connection, click MSN, click Set default, and then click OK.

This error can also occour if the TCP/IP->Dial-up Adapter is not configured
correctly for access to MSN. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Click start, point to Settings and click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Network.

3. On the Configuration tab, double-click TCP/IP.

4. On the IP Address tab, click Obtain An IP Address Automatically.

5. On the DNS Configuration tab, click Disable DNS.

6. On the WINS Configuration tab, click Disable WINS Resolution.

7. On the Gateway tab, clear the Installed Gateways box . If any gateways are
  listed in this box, click a gateway and then click Remove. Repeat this step
  until the Installed Gateways box is empty.

8. On the Bindings tab, make sure no network components are selected. If any
  network component is selected, clear the check box to the left of the
  component. If you are prompted to choose a driver to bind with, click No.

9. Click OK. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Note: the above instructions are NOT to be applied to MSN Explorer e-mail which
is HTTP mail, not POP3.
