The minimum system requirements to run Encarta 98 Deluxe edition are:

- A multimedia computer with a 486DX/50-MHz or higher processor.
- Microsoft Windows 95 operating system or Microsoft Windows NT Workstation
  operating system version 4.0 or later.
- 8 megabytes (MB) of memory (RAM) for Windows 95; 16 MB for Windows NT
  Workstation.
- 30 MB of available hard disk space for Windows 95 or Windows NT Workstation.
- A double-speed or faster CD-ROM drive.
- A Super VGA, 256-color monitor supporting 640 x 480 or higher resolution.
- A local-bus video adapter with 1 MB or more of video memory.
- A Microsoft Mouse, Microsoft IntelliMouse, or compatible pointing device.
- An audio adapter with speakers or headphones.

To use Encarta Research Organizer, you need:

- 5 MB of additional hard disk space.

To use Encarta Yearbook, Web links, and monthly online updates, you need:

- A 9600-bits-per-second (bps) or faster modem.
- Access to the Internet.
- 4 MB of additional hard disk space, plus 1 MB for each monthly installment.
- A Web browser.
