This article describes how to change your connection settings for MSN, The
Microsoft Network, including how to change your MSN access numbers, how to
change your dialing properties, and how to change your modem settings.

To change your MSN connection settings, use the appropriate method:

Change Your MSN Access Numbers
------------------------------

To change your MSN access numbers, use the following steps:

1. Right-click the MSN or the The Microsoft Network icon on the desktop, and
  then click Connection Settings.

2. Click Access Numbers.

3. In the Service Type box, click "Internet and The Microsoft Network."

4. Click Change next to the Primary box.

5. In the Country box, click your country.

6. In the State/Region box, click your state or region.

7. In the Access Numbers box, click the appropriate primary access number for
  your area.

8. Click OK.

To change your Backup access number, click Change next to the Backup box, and
then repeat steps 5-8. In the Access Numbers box, click an appropriate backup
access number for your area.

Change Your Dialing Properties
------------------------------

To change the MSN Dialing Properties, use the following steps:

1. Right-click the MSN or the The Microsoft Network icon on the desktop, and
  then click Connection Settings.

2. Click Dialing Properties.

3. Type your area code in the The Area Code Is box.

4. Click your country in the I Am In box.

5. In the "To access an outside line, first dial <number> for local" box,
  type the number required to access an outside line for local calls. In the
  "To access an outside line, first dial <number> for long distance" box,
  type the number required to access an outside line for long-distance calls.
  In many cases, these two numbers are the same. If you do not need to dial any
  numbers to access an outside line, leave both boxes blank.

6. If you use a calling card to connect to MSN, click the Dial Using Calling
  Card check box to select it, and then click Change. If you do not use a
  calling card to connect to MSN, skip to step 8.

7. In the Calling Card To Use box, click the calling card you want to use, and
  then click OK. For additional information on how to create custom calling

8. If you have call waiting on your telephone service, click the This Location
  Has Call Waiting check box to select it. In the To Disable It Dial box, click
  the code to disable call waiting that is used by your telephone service
  provider.

9. Click Tone Dialing if your telephone service uses tone dialing. Click Pulse
  Dialing if your telephone service uses pulse dialing.

10. If your MSN access number is a long distance call within your area code,
  then click the "Dial as a long distance call" check box to select it.

11. Click OK.

Change Your Modem Settings
--------------------------

To change your modem settings for MSN, use the following steps:

1. Right-click the MSN or the The Microsoft Network icon on the desktop, and
  then click Connection Settings.

2. In the Connect Using box, click the modem you use to connect to MSN, and then
  click Modem Settings.
