SYMPTOMS
========

In Encarta 1996 World Atlas, when you try to play a sound by clicking a sound
button, you may receive the following error message:

  ESS Audio Drive Driver Alert.

  The ESS Audio drive hardware is not responding properly. Sound playback and
  recording will not be available.

After you click OK in this error message box, the system stops responding
(hangs).

CAUSE
=====

This problem occurs because you have an outdated ESS proprietary sound card
driver installed on the system.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this problem, obtain an updated sound card driver from ESS
Technologies.
