IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry.
Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the
registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the
Windows folder.

SYMPTOMS
========

When you try to remove the program listed at the top of this article using the
Add/Remove Programs tool in the Windows Control Panel, you may receive the
following error message:

  Uninstaller Error! An error occurred while trying to remove Microsoft Music
  Central 96. Uninstallation has been canceled.

CAUSE
=====

This error message can occur if the CD-ROM drive letter has changed since the
original installation of Music Central. For example, this can happen after you
install a second hard disk. In some cases, this can cause your CD-ROM drive
letter to change.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:

Method 1
--------

Change the CD-ROM drive letter to the original drive letter designation, remove
the program listed at the top of this article, and then switch the drive
designation back to the new drive letter.

For information about how to perform this task, contact your hardware
manufacturer.

Method 2
--------

Delete the program's registry items.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values
online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a
backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the
registry.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall Windows . Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems
resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry
Editor at your own risk. The registry is a system-wide database used for storing
Windows software and hardware configuration settings.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. Type the following line, and then click OK:

     regedit

3. When Registry Editor appears, double-click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder.

4. Double-click the SOFTWARE folder, and then the Microsoft folder.

5. Double-click the Windows folder, and then the Current Version folder.

6. Double-click the Uninstall folder.

7. Click the folder entry for the program you are using. For example,
  MicrosoftMusicCentral96 or MicrosoftMusicCentral97

8. Click Delete. Confirm the deletion.

  CAUTION: Make sure you delete only the folder for the program listed at the
  top of this article.

9. Close Registry Editor. Run the program listed at the top of this article from
  your CD-ROM drive, and then exit the program.

You can now remove Music Central using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control
Panel.

MORE INFORMATION
================

NOTE: The programs listed at the the top of this article makes only minor
additions to your hard disk. The Uninstall feature only removes the shortcut
located on the Start menu, and removes the program's registry information.

If you decide to ignore the error and remove the Music Central icon from your
Start menu, do the following:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar or Taskbar & Start
  Menu.

2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab, and then click Remove.

3. Double-click the Microsoft Reference folder.

4. Click the program shortcut, and then click Remove.
