This article describes the manual installation procedure for Microsoft Scenes
2.0.

MORE INFORMATION

The following are steps assume:

- Windows is installed into C:\Windows
- you're installing Scenes to C:\Scenes
- and the collection you're installing is the Hollywood Collection from
  floppy drive A.

These steps involve creating folders and directories and copying and moving
files. For more information about how to accomplish these tasks in Windows,
see your Windows printed documentation or online help.

To manually install Scenes, do the following:

1. Create a Scenes folder on the hard drive. At the MS-DOS command prompt,
   type the following and press ENTER:

      c:\>md scenes

2. Create a Picsets folder under the Scenes folder. At the MS-DOS command
   prompt, type the following and press ENTER:

      c:\scenes>md picsets

3. Create a Hollywoo folder under the Scenes\Picsets folders. At the
   MS-DOS command prompt, type the following and press ENTER:

      c:\scenes\picsets>md hollywoo

4. Expand the following files from Disk 1 to the C:\Scenes folder:

      Scenes.ex_
      Scenes.hl_
      Msswiz.dl_

   For example, to expand Scenes.ex_, type the following at the MS-DOS
   command prompt and press ENTER:

      c:\scenes>expand a:\scenes.ex_ scenes.exe

5. Copy the Readme.txt file from Disk 1 to the C:\Scenes folder.

      c:\scenes>copy a:\readme.txt

6. Expand the following files from Disk 1 to the C:\Windows folder:

      Msscmn.Dl_
      Msscenes.Sc_
      Scenes2.In_

   For example, to expand Msscmn.Dl_, type the following at the MS-DOS
   command prompt and press ENTER:

      c:\windows>expand a:\msscmn.dl_ msscmn.dll

7. Expand the following files from Disk 1 to the C:\Windows\System folder:

      Pcdlib.dl_
      Ctl3dv2.dl_

   For example, to expand Pcdlib.dl_, type the following at the MS-DOS
   command prompt and press ENTER:

      c:\windows\system>expand a:\pcdlib.dl_ pcdlib.dll

8. Expand Collectn.sa_ from Disk 2 to the C:\Scenes\Picsets\Hollywoo
   folder by using the following example.

   For example, type the following at the MS-DOS command prompt and press
   ENTER:

      c:\scenes\picsets\hollywoo>expand a:\collectn.sa_ collectn.sac

9. Expand all of the ..jp files from Disk 1 to the
   C:\Scenes\Picsets\Hollywoo folder. For example, type the following at
   the MS-DOS command prompt and press ENTER:

      c:\scenes\picsets\hollywoo>expand a:\*.jp_ *.*

   When prompted for destination directory (folder), type:

      c:\scenes\picsets\hollywoo

10. Rename all *.jp_ files in the C:\Scenes\Picsets\Hollywoo
   folder to  *.jpg. For example,

      c:\scenes\picsets\hollywoo>rename *.jp_ *.jpg

11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 for Disk 2.

12. Expand all of the .th_ files from Disk 1 to the
   C:\Scenes\Picsets\Hollywoo folder. For example,

      c:\scenes\picsets\hollywoo>expand a:\*.th_ *.*

   When you are prompted for destination directory (or folder) type:

      c:\scenes\picsets\hollywoo

13. Rename all of the *.th_ files in the C:\Scenes\Picsets\Hollywoo
   folder too *.thm. For example,

      c:\scenes\picsets\hollywoo>rename *.th_ *.thm

14. Repeat steps 12 and 13 for Disk 2.

15. Expand all .nf_ files from Disk 1 to the C:\Scenes\Picsets\Hollywoo
   folder. For example:

      c:\scenes\picsets\hollywoo>expand a:\*.nf_ *.*

   When prompted for destination directory, type:

      c:\scenes\picsets\hollywoo

16. Rename all of the *.nf_ files in the C:\Scenes\Picsets\Hollywoo
   folder to *.nfo. For example:

      c:\scenes\picsets\hollywoo>rename *.nf_ *.nfo

17. Repeat steps 15 and 16 for Disk 2.

18. In Windows 95, create a shortcut for Scenes by using the following
   steps:

   a.  From the Start menu, select Settings - Taskbar.
   b.  Click the Start Menu Programs tab.
   c.  Click the Add button.
   d.  Type in 'c:\scenes\scenes.exe' on the Command Line and press Enter.
   e.  Click the New Folder button.
   f.  Type in 'Microsoft Scenes' and press Enter.
   g.  Where it says 'Select a name for the shortcut', type in 'Microsoft
       Scenes' and press Enter.
   h.  Click the OK button to close the Taskbar Properties dialog box.
   i.  Skip to step 21.

19. In Windows 3.1, create a new group in Program Manager for Scenes by
   using the following steps:

   a.  On File menu in Program Manager, click New.
   b.  Click Program Group. Click OK.
   c.  In the Description box, type Microsoft Scenes. Click OK.

20. In Windows 3.1, create a new program item for Scenes by using the
   following steps.

   a.  On File menu in Program Manager, click New.
   b.  Click Program Item, OK.
   c.  In the Description box, type Microsoft Scenes.
   d.  In the Command box type "c:\scenes\scenes.exe" (without the
       quotation marks) and click OK.

21. Create icons for Scenes on-line help and Readme.txt using step 19 as an
   example.

22. Run Scenes and ignore the error message.

23. Run the Add A Collection To Scenes Wizard. Point the wizard to the
   c:\scenes\picsets\hollywoo folder.
