This article provides instructions to manually install Bookshelf 1995.
This article does not include steps for the optional Word for Windows integration
feature. Please see the file Readme.txt on your Bookshelf 1995 CD-Rom for more
information on manually integrating Word and Bookshelf 1995.

These instructions assume:
- Your hard disk is drive C.
- Your destination folder is C:\Books95
- Your Windows folder is C:\Windows
- Your CD-Rom drive is drive D.
If your hard disk drive, destination folder, Windows directory, or CD- ROM drive
letters are different, replace the drive letters and folder names throughout
this article with the drive letters and folder names on your computer.
NOTE: The following instructions discuss copying, editing, and modifying folders
and files. For more information about accomplishing these tasks in Windows, see
your Windows printed documentation or online Help.
Steps for Windows or Windows for Workgroups, Versions 3.x
---------------------------------------------------------
If you are running Microsoft Windows 3.x, follow these steps. When copying files,
exit Windows and copy from the MS-DOS command prompt. Allow MS-DOS to overwrite
any files it finds already on your hard drive.
1. Copy the following files from the D:\Aamsstp\System folder to the C:\Windows
folder:
- Bshelf93.Exe
- Mplayer.exe
- Mplayer.hlp
For example, to copy Bshelf93.exe, type the following at the MS-DOS command
prompt and press the ENTER key at the end of the line:
copy d:\aamsstp\system\bshelf93.exe c:\windows
NOTE: The file is called Bshelf93.exe for backward compatibility.
2. Create a folder named C:\Books95 on your hard drive.
For example, type the following at the MS-DOS command prompt and press the
ENTER key at the end of the line:
md c:\books95
3. Copy all the files located in the D:\Aamsstp\App folder to the C:\Books95
folder.
4. Copy the file D:\Aamsstp\System\Mmp.dll to C:\Books95.
5. Copy D:\Readme.txt to C:\Books95.
6. Copy the following files from the D:\Aamsstp\System folder to
C:\Windows\System folder:
- ACMCMPRS.DLL
- INIUPD.DLL
- MSACM.DRV
- OLE2NLS.DLL
- AVICAP.DLL
- IR21_R.DLL
- MSADPCM.ACM
- OLE2PROX.DLL
- AVIFILE.DLL
- IR32.DLL
- MSGSM610.ACM
- STORAGE.DLL
- COMPOBJ.DLL
- MAP_WIN.HLP
- MSRLE.DRV
- TYPELIB.DLL
- CTL3DV2.DLL

7. Create a folder named C:\Windows\Msapps\Msinfo.
8. Copy the file D:\Aamsstp\System\Msinfo.exe to C:\Windows\Msapps\Msinfo
folder.
9. Use a text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad, to make the following changes
to the Bshelf95.ini file, which is located in the Windows folder. If the
Bshelf95.ini file does not already exist, create one in the Windows folder
with these entries:

10. Bookshelf 1995 installs special TrueType fonts. Perform the following steps
to install the fonts manually:
- In the Windows Control Panel, double-click Fonts.
- Click the Add button.
- Change the drive to your CD-Rom drive.
- Double-click the AAMSSTP folder, and then the FONTS folder.
- Choose the Select All button to select the following:
Arial (TrueType)
Arial Bold (TrueType)
Arial Bold Italics (TrueType)
Arial Italics (TrueType)
Bookshelf Symbol 1 (TrueType)
Bookshelf Symbol 2 (TrueType)
Bookshelf Symbol 3 (TrueType)
Symbol (TrueType)
11. Click OK, and then click Close.
12. Use a text editor to make the following changes to the Windows information
files, which are located in the Windows folder:

13. Choose Run from the File menu in Program Manager. Type in the following
command, and then click OK:
d:\aamsstp\system\mplayer.reg
Repeat step 8 using the following command lines:
d:\aamsstp\system\ole2.reg
d:\aamsstp\system\cleanup.reg
d:\aamsstp\profdisp.exe.
14. Add the Bookshelf 1995 icons to Program Manager by following the
instructions at the end of this article.
15. Exit Windows and restart the computer. The installation is now complete.
Steps for Windows 95 or Windows NT
----------------------------------
Follow these steps if you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT.
When copying files, DO NOT overwrite ANY existing files.
CAUTION: Allowing the system files to be overwritten in Windows 95 or Windows NT
may cause improper system performance.
1. Copy the file D:\Aamsstp\System\Bshelf93.exe to C:\Windows.
2. Follow steps 2 through 5 in the Windows 3.x section above, to copy program
files. DO NOT use step 6 above, which is for copying Windows 3.x system
files.
3. Follow step 9 in the Windows 3.x section above, to edit or create the
Books95.ini file.
4. Use a text editor to make the following changes to the Windows information
files, which are located in the Windows folder:

5. Perform the following steps to install the special TrueType fonts:
a. In the Windows Control Panel, double-click Fonts.
b. On the File menu, click Install New Font.
c. Change the drive to your CD-Rom drive.
d. Double-click the Aamsstp folder, and then the Fonts folder.
e. Click the Select All button to select all the fonts.
f. Make sure the Copy font to... box is checked.
g. Click OK.
6. If you are using Windows NT 3.1, copy the file
D:\Aamsstp\System\Msvideo.nt to C:\Windows\System32.
NOTE: After copying this file, it must be renamed to Msvideo.dll.
7. Add the program icons or shortcuts using the appropriate section below as a
guide.
Create the Start Menu Shortcuts
-------------------------------
If you are using Windows 95, add Bookshelf 1995 to the Start Menu by following
these instructions:
1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click the Taskbar.
2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab.
3. Click Add.
4. Type the following in the Command Line box, and then click Next:
c:\books95\bshelf95.exe
5. In the Select Program Folder dialog box, click on the Microsoft Multimedia
folder to select it, and then click Next.
NOTE: If Microsoft Multimedia is not listed, create it as follows:
a. Click New Folder
b. Type in the following, and then click Next: Microsoft Multimedia
6. In the Select A Title For The Program dialog box, type the following, and
then click Finish:

7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 to create the remaining shortcuts:
Command Line: c:\books95\qshelf95.exe
Select A Title: QuickShelf 1995
Command Line: c:\windows\notepad.exe c:\books95\readme.txt
Select A Title: Bookshelf 1995 Readme
Command line: d:\mmcat\catppi.exe
Select A Title: Microsoft Multimedia Catalog
8. If you desire QuickShelf to start whenever Windows starts, create a
QuickShelf shortcut in the Startup folder. Repeat steps 3 through 6 using the
information for Shortcut 2, but select the Startup folder instead of the
Microsoft Multimedia folder.
Create Program Manager Icons
----------------------------
If you use the Windows Program Manager, create the Bookshelf 1995 icons as
follows:
1. Open the Microsoft Multimedia group. If this group does not already exist,
create it as follows:
a. On the File menu, click New.
b. Click Program Group, and then click OK.
c. In the Description box, type the following, and then click OK:
Microsoft Multimedia
2. On the File menu, click New.
3. Click Program Item, and then click OK.
4. Type in the Description and Command Line as listed below, and then click OK:

Description: Bookshelf 1995
Command Line: c:\books95\bshelf95.exe
5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 to create the remaining items:
Item 2:
Description: QuickShelf 1995
Command Line: c:\books95\qshelf95.exe
Item 3:
Description: Bookshelf 1995 Readme
Command Line: c:\windows\notepad.exe c:\books95\readme.txt
Working Directory: c:\books95

6. If you desire QuickShelf to start whenever Windows starts, create a
QuickShelf icon in the Startup group. Open the Startup group, and then repeat
steps 2 through 4 using the information for Item 2.
