To run the Microsoft TCP/IP protocol and utilities on remoteboot MS-DOS
workstations, you must make some changes to the setup files. The printed
documentation and release notes for LAN Manager 2.1, 2.1a, and 2.2 have some
errors in the instructions for changing these files: this article provides the
correct procedure.

Although the NetBEUI protocol is by default statically loaded and bound on
remotely booted workstations, you can set up the remote boot service so that
users at remoteboot MS-DOS workstations can dynamically load and unload other
protocols.

To use TCP/IP in addition to NetBEUI, your remoteboot server's LAN Manager root
directory must have the subdirectory:

  \RPL\RPLFILES\BINFILES\LANMAN.DOS\DRIVERS\PROTOCOL\TCPIP.

Create any directories in this path that do not exist. Then follow these steps
(before running RPLINST):

1. Copy all files from the \DRIVERS\PROTOCOL\TCPIP subdirectory on the LAN
  Manager MS-DOS Drivers disk to the
  \RPL\RPLFILES\BINFILES\LANMAN.DOS\DRIVERS\PROTOCOL\TCPIP subdirectory of the
  server's LAN Manager root directory. Type

  " DECOMP input_file output_file" (without the quotation marks)

  to decompress the files with extensions ending in "$."

   - All .EX$ files should be decompressed to .EXE files, and UNLOAD.EXE should
     then be renamed UNLOADT.EXE.

   - All .86$ files should be decompressed to .86 files.

   - All .CO$ files should be decompressed to .COM files.

   - All .DO$ files should be decompressed to .DOS files.

2. After the files are decompressed, you may delete all files ending in "$" to
  recover disk space. If you have already run RPLINST, run it again to set the
  protections for these files.

3. Edit the configuration files for the remoteboot profile.

  You may want to create a separate profile for workstations that need TCP/IP,
  because the drivers consume approximately 80K of memory. If so, use the
  Remoteboot Manager to create a new profile with the appropriate hardware
  configuration. Use the default configuration for all supported adapters that
  are not listed separately in the possible configurations.

   - Edit the profile's AUTOEXEC.BAT file found in the RPL\RPLFILES\<PROFILE
     NAME> directory, uncommenting or adding the following lines:

  UMB.COM
  LOAD TCPIP
  NMTSR.EXE

   - Edit the profile's CONFIG.SYS file in the same directory removing REM from
     the beginning of the DEVICE=NEMM.DOS line.

   - Edit the DOSBB.CNF file for the specific adapter
     rpl\bblock\netbeui\<adapter name>\dosbb.cnf to uncomment TCPDRV.DOS

     If there are any changes to network card configuration details, edit
     RPL\BBLOCK\NETBEUI\<ADAPTER NAME>\PROTOCOL.INI.

     Examples of modified configuration files for a 3Com Etherlink II and
     profile named elnktcp are given below.

Now use Remoteboot Manager to edit the properties of a workstation as follows:

1. Select the workstation and choose Properties from the remoteboot menu.

2. Set the workstation's profile to the profile modified above.

3. Fill in the IP address parameters for this workstation.

4. Choose OK to save the changes in RPL.MAP.

This workstation is now configured to load the TCP/IP and RFC NetBIOS drivers at
boot time.
