SUMMARY
=======

This article provides instructions to manually install Microsoft Beethoven for
Windows.

The steps below assume:

- Your hard disk drive is C.

- Your CD-ROM drive is drive D.

Copy Files
----------

1. Create a directory on the hard disk called C:\LUDWIG by typing the following
  at the MS-DOS command prompt:

  "md c:\ludwig" (without the quotation marks)

2. Make it the current directory. For example, at the MS-DOS command prompt,
  type the following and press ENTER:

  "cd c:\ludwig" (without the quotation marks)

3. Copy and rename the following files from the CD-ROM by typing the following
  at the command prompt

  "copy d:\<old filename> c:<new filename>" (without the quotation
  marks)

  where the following applies:

     <old filename>    <new filename>
     --------------    --------------

     TBKBASE.DL_       TBKBASE.DLL
     TBKCOMP.DL_       TBKCOMP.DLL
     TBKUTIL.DL_       TBKUTIL.DLL
     TBKWIN.DL_        TBKWIN.DLL
     NINTHMSG.DL_      NINTHMSG.DLL
     TBOOK.EX_         TBOOK.EXE
     NINTHGLY.TB_      NINTHGLY.TBK
     LUDWIG.IC_        LUDWIG.ICO
     README.WRI        README.WRI
     THENINTH.TB_      THENINTH.TBK

4. Create a directory called C:\LUDWIG\MIDI. For example, type the following at
  the MS-DOS command prompt and press ENTER:

  "md c:\ludwig\midi" (without the quotation marks)

5. Copy all files from the MIDI directory of the CD-ROM to the C:\LUDWIG\MIDI
  directory. For example, type the following at the MS-DOS command prompt and
  press ENTER:

  "copy d:\midi\*.* c:\ludwig\midi" (without the quotation marks)

6. The files in the C:\LUDWIG\MIDI directory have an ".MI_" extension. They need
  to be renamed with a ".MID" extension. To change the names, type the
  following at the MS-DOS command prompt and press ENTER:

  "ren *.mi_ *.mid" (without the quotation marks)

Program Manager - Create Icons
------------------------------

If you use Windows Program Manager, create a new program group for Multimedia
Beethoven and add the Beethoven program as a new program item to this group. The
following command line should be used:

  c:\ludwig\tbook.exe c:\ludwig\theninth.tbk

To have the Beethoven icon appear in the Program Manager instead of the Toolbook
icon, choose Change Icon from the New Program Item dialog box and type the
following filename as the file in which to look for the icon:

  c:\ludwig\ludwig.ico

Windows 95 - Creating Start Menu Shortcuts
------------------------------------------

If you are using Windows 95, do the following to add Beethoven to the Start
menu:

1. With your right mouse button, click the taskbar. Click Properties.

2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab

3. Click Advanced.

4. Double-click the Programs Folder.

5. Create a Beethoven Folder.
  a. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.

  b. Type the following and press ENTER:

  "Microsoft Beethoven" (without the quotation marks)

6. Open the Microsoft Beethoven folder.

7. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Shortcut.

8. Type the following into the Target box:

  "c:\ludwig\tbook.exe c:\ludwig\theninth.tbk" (without the quotation marks)

9. Click Next

10. Type the following name for the shortcut, and then click Finish:

  "Microsoft Beethoven" (without the quotation marks)

11. To have the Beethoven icon appear in the Start Menu instead of the toolbook
  icon, do the following:
  a. With your right mouse button, click the Beethoven shortcut. Then, click
     Properties.

  b. Click the Shortcut tab, and then click Change Icon.

  c. Type the following in the File Name box, and then click OK:

  "c:\ludwig\ludwig.ico" (without the quotation marks)

  d. Click OK to finish.
